Recommended Configuration

8-bit Characters in Header Fields

By default OE sends 8-bit characters in header fields (e.g. From: or Subject:) without proper declaration. Quite often this does not survive transport through Usenet and ends up as garbled characters.

Correct settings:

Tools → Options... → Send → "News Sending Format"

  • Switch to "Plain Text"

Tools → Options... → Send → Plain Text Settings...

  • select message format "MIME"
  • Encode text using: None
  • disable "Allow 8-bit characters in headers"

This picture also shows a very large number for "Automatically wrap text". The problem with this feature is that there is no preview, it is applied when you send the message. Since overlong lines are a small problem compared to inapropriate line wrappings, it is recommended to deactivate this feature.

Optional Configuration

NNTP over SSL (NNTPS)

Switching from plain-text to encrypted communication is a separate step not covered by the configuration wizard.
